Ultimate List of Gifts to Encourage Healthy Moving {Holiday Gift Guide}
The calendar just turned to November, so…
“It’s that time of year.”
Time for you to start “making a list and checking it twice.”
“And so I’m offering this simple [list] for kids from one to 92.”
Okay, I’ll stop. But I do want to encourage you to add some things to both your own wish list and your gift lists that will inspire some Healthy Moving!
So often we think of exercise as punishment or a chore. But, moving your body should be fun. These gifts will help you (or your loved ones) rediscover that.
Here are my favorite Healthy Moving gift ideas, plus some tips and tricks on how to use them, to get you and your loved ones weaving movement into your days.
For Around the House
1. Bolster: This is one of the most functional props. Use it for a psoas release while reading to your kids or for sitting on the floor while watching television or working on your laptop.
2. Mexican Blanket: When my kids aren’t using my blankets for fort-building or pretend picnics with their stuffed animals, I use them for support in seated and reclining positions. Or, I stand on a folded one while balancing on one foot while I chat on the phone.
3. Half Dome: We all need more calf-stretching in our lives. Keep one of these puppies at your kitchen sink and lengthen your calves as you do the dinner dishes.
4. Yoga Blocks: These are such a great multi-functional tool. I put my laptop on them when I’m sitting on the floor. And, I also use them to strengthen my lateral hips in a pelvic list.
5. Yoga Strap: Use one of these while you are lying on the floor watching TV to stretch your hamstrings.
6. Yoga Mat: I am ALL FOR weaving movement into your day. But, even ten minutes on the mat at the start or end of your day can be extremely powerful. This mat works well on carpet or hard floors.
7. Resistance Band or SPRI Xertube Resistance Band Exercise Cord with Handles: If you are looking to improve your strength in the New Year, you’ll want to add one of these to your list! You can do leg work as you watch TV, or keep it attached to your closet door to sneak in a few upper body exercises each day.
8. Looped Resistance Tube or Resistance Loop Bands: I keep one of these in my laundry basket. Then I put it around my calves and monster walk to put away all the laundry.
9. Foam Roller: Roll around on one of these as you watch TV to give your muscles a massage and get you off the couch.
10. Balance Pods: Scatter these on the ground in a high-traffic area of your house. Each time you (and your kids) pass through, pretend they are rocks in a lake filled with alligators. Cross on them without falling in!
11. Squatty Potty: You need more squatting in your life. But not endless reps of squatting exercises. Functional squatting for things like picking something up off the floor and…bathroom-ing.
12. Bosu Balance Trainer: Don’t just sit on the couch while you chat on the phone. Gab away as you play with balancing on one foot on one of these.
13. Small 9″ Exercise Ball: These small balls are wonderful for building reflexive core strength!
14. Door Attachment for Hanging: Hanging and brachiating (a.k.a., arm swinging) are critical for your upper body health, but if you haven’t been monkeying around much, you should start with your feet on the ground.
Stick one of these in a closet door you walk by frequently throughout your day and take a 2-minute hanging break each time you pass by. (You can also loop your resistance band through it for a variety of upper body exercises.)
15. Hanging Bar: If you’re ready to take your hanging game up to the next level (see what I did there), put one of these on a door jam in your house. Mind your alignment markers as you hang for a few minutes each time you pass through the door.
16. Boot Tray filled with River Rock: Give your feet some important movement while you cook or fold laundry by standing on river rock. I like the dynamic aspect of loose rock in a tray, but if you have little ones at home and don’t want the rocks scattered throughout your house, a mat like this will also work.
17. Eye Bag or Sandbag: I absolutely love restorative yoga poses for stress relief. And when life is particularly challenging, I need all the grounding support I can get. So I put an eye bag over my eyes and a sand bag over my feet in reclining bound angle or supported bridge pose…Ahhhhmaaazing!
18. Bed Buddy: When muscle tension is making movement challenging, these little gems can be a real help. (I sometimes put it around my neck during restorative yoga poses, too.)
For the Office
19. Topo Standing Desk Mat: I got my Topo two months ago, and I fell hard for it. It is amazing. Friends, the opposite of sitting all day is NOT standing all day. It’s MOVING all day! We can’t simply stand at our desks. We have to move. The Topo mat helps you move and stretch as you work. Great for your body and your productivity!
20. Pool Noodle: For the times you are sitting in a chair (or car seat), you need to get off your sacrum and onto your sitting bones. Cut a pool noodle down, and sit on the edge of it to roll forward so the front of your pelvis (the triangle formed by your ASIS and pubic bone) is perpendicular to the floor.
21. Large Yoga Ball: When you are taking a break from your standing workstation, sit on one of these instead of a regular desk chair.
22. Therapy Balls or Tennis Balls: When you’re sitting or standing at your computer, you can show some love to the 52 bones, 66 joints, 215 ligaments, 38 muscles and tendons in your feet by rolling around on one of these.
23. Adjustable-Height Standing Desk: It’s much easier to move your body as you work when your desk is movable, too! Spend part of your day standing and part of your day sitting to make your desk-time more healthy!
For the Outdoors
24. Slack Line: If you have big trees in your backyard, invest in one of these! It will provide tons of fun and movement nutrients!
25. Fitbit: You should be walking an average of three to five miles a day. But, it doesn’t always have to be done in one long walk. If tracking how much distance you’ve logged will help keep you motivated, you’ll love one of these.
26. Xero Minimal Shoes: If you’ve been wanting to expand your minimal shoe collection, add some Xero shoes to your wishlist. My favorites are the Umara Z-Trails. Their new closed-toe shoe – the Ipari Hana – looks amazing. And you can’t beat the price of the DIY Kit!
For Kids (and the young at heart)
27. Dome Climber: Vitamin climb. Does your body and your spirit good!
28. Kite: “Let’s go fly a kite…” And get loads of Healthy Moving, fresh air and fun in the process!
29. Wobble Chair: Replace your child’s traditional chair with one of these to give them lots of opportunities to balance and move as they work at a desk or table.
30. Indoor Gym: With a swing, plastic rings, trapeze bar, climbing ladder, and swinging rope, your kids will have tons of fun indoors during the cold winter months.
31. Tunnel Tent: Crawling is such a wonderful form of Healthy Moving. Encourage your kids to crawl, even after they can walk, with one of these.
32. Indoor Trampoline: Create an indoor obstacle course with one of these, the balance pods, maybe the Bosu Balance Trainer, some bolsters or pillows, an upside down half dome, a few yoga blocks and the tunnel tent. (Pro tip: this is fun for grownups, too!)
33. The Big Book of Nature Activities: This book is packed with amazing ideas to get you and your kids outside and moving.
34. T-stool: These offer a great way to work on balance during “sitting” activities.
35. Wobble Cushion: These can be used to stand or sit on and make floor time fun!
Stocking Stuffers
36. Foot Alignment Socks: Slide these on your feet instead of slippers when you are chillin’ at home to improve your foot and whole body health!
37. Stainless Steel Travel Mug: You know walking outside is good for you body, mind and spirit. During the cold, winter months, take a few short, 10-15 minute walks outside each day. Bundle up and use this mug to sip on a warm beverage as you walk.
For ANYONE, ANYWHERE!
38. Healthy Moving Gift Certificate: If you want to get (or give) tons of inspiration on how to weave more movement in your life, might I humbly suggest a Healthy Moving gift certificate.
Ok, friends. There you have it! Happy wishing and shopping. And, “may your New Year dreams [of health and wellness] come true!”
(Yes, I admit it. The Christmas music is on in my house. Not. Even. Sorry.)

The traditional yoga bolster seemed too big to pack. I got an inflatable yoga bolster (Like the balance ball) and it is perfect. I can deflate for moving and inflate when we get there. Best of both worlds.
That is a great list Jen, thank you! I’m going to add items to my wish list now.
