“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~Lao-tzu

John & Sherry - Here to pump <clap> you up!

I’m a dreamer, a big picture fantasist. I’m good at the macro stuff. I find details yawn worthy.

This is why I love a good set of before and after pictures. They don’t waste my time by telling me all the tiny little steps that went in to getting from point A to point B. They acknowledge and feed my need for the big picture.

Even when the details are offered to me, I typically glaze right over them. In fact, I’m often guilty of fast-forwarding through the middle of design shows so that I can hurry up and get to the after picture.

The fact that I’m a big picture gal has served me well on occasion. But, many times my visions stay just that, because the big picture is really just a whole bunch of small stuff all lumped together.

For a long time I just accepted that I wasn’t born with an eye for detail, and I’d just have to surround myself with people who were if any of my dreams were to become reality. Then I started reading Young House Love.

John and Sherry write about 35 posts a month, most of which detail projects they are doing around their own home. It would take some serious superpowers (and super funds) to do 35 major projects a month.

Instead of big, fancy before and after reveals, they take us all on the day-to-day journey of transforming the big picture. They grab us by the hand and say, “Look how fun all the little stuff is!” Who knew something as simple as a handle upgrade could be so exciting? And, can we all agree that every bathroom can benefit from a fancy toilet paper fold?

John and Sherry are like optometrists that fit us all with micro-vision lenses. They show us that our ideals, our dreams are within reach if we just travel toward them one step at a time.

Whether we’re making over a room in our house or we’re trying to change the world for the better, may we all have eyes to see the little steps that we need to take to get there!

Are you a big-picture person like me or already blessed with an eye for detail? What have you dreamed of doing but never gotten to because it was hard to see the all the little steps that would take you there?

P.S. This post is part of a series called “Why I Love Young House Love.” And yes, I am asserting that two of my favorite bloggers are changing the world, one DIY project at a time.

Very good point. It reminded me how how I keep kicking myself for never taking “before” pictures when doing a project around the house. It sure would be nice to be able to reflect upon the journey once it was done.
